Despite being renowned worldwide, Chianti Classico is a wine region enveloped in confusion, misrepresentation, and mystery. Over the centuries, the name Chianti has brought the rolling hills between Florence and Siena both celebrated acclaim, as well as a reputation for producing cheap, rustic table wine served in a straw-encased flask. In most respects, Chianti's very success led to its sullied standing starting in the fifteenth century and its subsequent road to redemption that began in 1716 with the edict by Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici. This edict established the world's first legal appellation of origin globally and was the first attempt by the Chiantigiani to take back their name that had, and would continue to be, appropriated the world over. Even with this and many other efforts that followed, the hundreds of years of missed opportunities within the appellation have led Chianti's reputation to continue to suffer despite it clearly belonging in the pantheon of noble wines of the world.
