When we think of volcanos, we think of destruction. In the aftermath of the destruction, you’ll find the perfect soil for intense flavorful wines. These wines known as Volcanic wines are growing in popularity.

Volcanic wines are exactly what they sound like, wines derived from grapes grown in vineyards located on or near active or dormant volcanoes. They are unique wines, grown on soil that is rich in volcanic minerals, set apart from other wines by distinct flavors and aromas. Regions like the Canary Islands and Mt. Etna are famous for their volcanic wines.

The soils in these areas are rich in volcanic minerals like potassium, magnesium and phosphorus. giving wine from this soil a unique mineral character. Flavors and aromas can include smoke, ash, flint, and even sulfur. While quite subtle, these flavors can add depth and complexity to the wine, making it stand out from the crowd. In the porous and well-draining soil, vines may struggle more to find water and nutrients. Instead of being a challenge, this is a boon for the wine, leading to more concentrated grapes and more intense flavors.

Volcanic wines can be found in regions around the world  including Italy, France, Greece, Chile, Argentina, and the United States.

  • Etna, Italy: The slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily are home to some of the most famous volcanic wines in the world, including Nerello Mascalese and Carricante.
